I am amazed by how much the succulent plants in my “chair garden” grew over the summer months. During the first week of October, knowing we could potentially have a frost in the two weeks while we would be away on vacation, I moved the chair into the shelter of our 3-season porch. We’re back from our warm and wonderful vacation in Louisiana, so I’ve been busy moving the plants from the unheated porch into the house so that I can begin the next phase of over-wintering them.

To do this, I removed the succulent clump from the chair’s basket, shook off the excess soil, then teased the plants apart. I gave the individual plants a bath (a gentle shower in the kitchen sink), then spritzed them with a little Neem oil to minimize bugs. I found two unused pots in the garage, cleaned them up a bit, then used them to pot up the individual plants. The pots belong to a set we purchased as front porch decor a few years ago, so it’s nice seeing them in use again.

Before we left on vacation, my hubby did some Amazon shopping and purchased a unique, 5-armed grow light. He set it up for me so that I can give my plants a little extra light each day. The arms are “gooseneck,” so they can be adjusted to whatever height or angle I need. I can also set a timer and choose brightness levels.
My Saturday has an extra hour in it because we set our clocks back one hour tonight, but I need to get busy potting up the rest of the plants I dragged into the house. I have read that I can keep my mandevilla vine as a houseplant over the winter months, so that’s next on the to-do list. So, I’ll sign off for now with my thanks for joining me for another Six on Saturday peek at the happenings in my garden.

You take much better care of your plants than I do.

You’re kind to say so. I have dabbled with houseplants for several decades now, but have only in the past two years gotten to the point where I pay more attention to what the plants need of me, care-wise.

Thank you, Flower. It was a fun process to watch. I’m on the lookout for another suitable castaway chair or two and and hope to create another chair garden or three again next summer. I hope all is well in your world.

That light is going to be just the thing to keep your succulents from becoming etiolated over the winter. I too have just moved mu succulents into the conservatory from the garden.

I have to admit…I had to learn what ‘etiolated’ meant. Learned something new, and I think you’re right–the light will be just the thing. Oh, to have a conservatory. I hope all of your plants fare well too.

Thank you, Rosie! I don’t think I brought TOO many bugs in the house. I hope I pay enough attention to the plants to keep them healthy until next season outdoors…we’ll see.

I love your succulent chair and it’s cool to see what you do with them over the cold season as well. I’m transitioning into indoor gardening now as well but have always steered clear of succulents because of an overwatering mishap with the few we had. I have 3 of the clip-on versions of that gooseneck plant light, arrange on three windowsills to give extra light over the winter!

Thanks for taking time to read my post, Angela. I’ve drowned my fair share of succulents–that’s for sure. I’m not entirely sure I’m doing the right thing for all of these plants I’ve dragged in from outdoors, but I’m sure I’ll learn something along the way. My hubby told me that he did a review for the plant light and they’re sending him one of the 3-light clip-on versions as a thank you. I’m sure I can put it to good use. I wish you the best success in caring for your plants during the winter season.
