A Week of Flowers – Day #2

I’m joining Cathy at Words and Herbs for her annual ‘A Week of Flowers’ meme. It’s Day #2 and I’m happy to take you on a little reminisce of some pretty spring and early summer days in my garden. Let me introduce you to a few of my favorite peonies.

Paeonia ‘Bartzella’ Itoh – such a pretty yellow
Japanese tree peony ‘Shima-Nishiki’ (more of a bush than a tree)
Peonies and iris make beautiful garden partners…wouldn’t you agree?
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ (reminds me of a poofy, pink tutu)

My dad was known for the peonies he grew on both the east and west sides of our house on the corner of 106th and Stark in Milwaukee. Dad went Home to heaven back in 2008. My mother took up the trowel and tended his garden during his final battle with cancer. The gardening bug bit Momma (hard) and she continued gardening for several years more until 2015 when Alzheimer’s made it too difficult. It makes my heart happy to see a few of dad’s peonies growing in my garden–it brings back sweet memories of both of my parents.

I love sharing about my barefoot gardening adventures, hence my blogger name. As I write, some of my other passions might spill out -- like fun with grandkids, baking and sewing endeavors, what I'm studying in Scripture, and the like. My readers will notice that one of the primary things I write about is Alzheimer's. May what I write be an encouragement to anyone who is a caregiver for someone they love with memory loss.

  1. Beautiful flowers full of good memories… what more can a gardener wish for? 😉 The yellow one is especially pretty, but I love them all! Great selection Cindie. Thanks for sharing!
