Turning the Last Page

From the moment I arrived at BeeHive, it was apparent to me that we would be experiencing the final chapter of Mom’s remarkable sojourn on earth. The stroke had dealt a crushing blow, adding further injury to Alzheimer’s furtive chipping away of her mind and body.

I will forever be grateful to the staff of BeeHive for graciously allowing me to stay at my mother’s side during her final days. It was a hard week, filled with opportunities to be a comfort to my mother, and moments both endearing and bittersweet. My overnight vigil afforded a rare opportunity to observe the night shift at work, deepening my appreciation for those dear ones who watched over the residents at night.

On May 24, 2020, a beautiful Sunday morning, as I held her hand in mine, the final page of Momma’s life was quietly turned. My sweet mother’s story on this side of Glory ended just as I hoped and prayed: Alzheimer’s lost and God won as He called her gently Home to begin the story that never ends.

I love sharing about my barefoot gardening adventures, hence my blogger name. As I write, some of my other passions might spill out -- like fun with grandkids, baking and sewing endeavors, what I'm studying in Scripture, and the like. My readers will notice that one of the primary things I write about is Alzheimer's. May what I write be an encouragement to anyone who is a caregiver for someone they love with memory loss.

  1. Cindie, I wept as I read “turning the last page” of your beautiful mom’s life. She is finally home. I just prayed for you, I do understand the loss of your mom. I know that our sweet Savior will comfort you and give you peace. The photo of you holding her hand as she left this life to enter eternity is so poignant. Sending hugs.

    1. It was truly a blessing. Let me know when you’re ready to get together again, Eishe. I met up with another BeeHive family friend yesterday for a walk at Alpine Meadows. It was good to catch up and encourage one another.

  5. I can imagine that along with these feelings of love and gratitude and release you will also be feeling a huge hole in your life, you have been giving your Mum so much attention over these last years. May the next phase of your own life be relaxed and joyful; and as creative as the one you are leaving. Very best wishes.

    1. Thank you for your sweet best wishes, Lucy. It’s still early, and a few mom-related things to settle, but I challenged myself to restart an all but abandoned routine of walking in the morning. I’m quite enjoying it. Don’t be surprised if you see that self-care topic popping up on my blog.
